Lord Provost Sadie Docherty visited apprentices involved in the city’s preparations for the commemoration of the First World War.
On August 4th, Glasgow will host the first and largest of three national events to mark the 100th anniversary of the UK’s entry into the conflict.
Lord Provost Sadie Docherty met trainees Kyle Baxter, Richard Reston, Jamie Nelson and Craig Kerr.
The events in Glasgow, Belgium and Westminster Abbey are a key part of the UK Government’s centenary programme and Mrs Docherty visited City Building’s Queenslie Training Centre to meet four apprentices, two of whom have a personal interest in the Glasgow event.
One is a serving Armed Forces reservist and the other’s great grandfather fought in the Great War.
All four have been building a stage for the George Square commemoration from where Prince Charles and Mrs Docherty will view the march past of military personnel and veterans.
The Lord Provost said: “Our City Building apprentices have been working hard on this part of the First World War commemorations. Glasgow is honoured to host the first of the UK centenary war commemorations.”
Among the trainees Mrs Docherty met were apprentice joiners Jamie Nelson a Reservist with the Army Engineers and Kyle Baxter.
Jamie, 21, from Milton completed a tour of duty in Afghanistan in 2012-2013.
He said: “An event like this is important to commemorate and gives us an opportunity to support our current armed forces and veterans.”
Kyle, 20 from Parkhead said that his great-grandfather Stephen McIntyre had been killed in the First World War.
